Rebozo

Rebozo means love, identity and tradition. This lovely garment is a symbol of feminity in Mexico, all Mexican women own a least one piece. The traditional and artisan way to make the rebozo is handwoven, the material can be cotton, silk, rayon, articela, wool. The garment is a traditional piece and can be very modern. The famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo wore one with all her outfits. Mexican embroidered dresses

Mexican embroidered dresses are very good example that reflects Mexican culture. Each region of Mexico use different techniques to embroider dresses, blouses and different garments. Mexican Box presents you pieces mainly from Puebla, Hidalgo, Queretaro, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Mexican Embroidered dresses have always been used as every day wear.

One the most famous Mexican embroidered dress is from San Gabriel Chilac, Puebla, in this community there are many artisans, most of them women that makes the dresses according to the traditional patterns that are inspired on flowers and other symbols that were originally copied from figures in the architecture of churches built more than 200 years ago. You can commonly find flowers, leaves, and peacocks.

Mexican Huarache Sandals

Huaraches are a crude form of sandals. Huarache has to be handmade and with natural leather materials. The typical huarache is made of a tire sole, and made with hand-woven braided leather straps, and it normally looks like a traditional leather semi-closed shoe. The word huarache comes from the word Kuarache in Tarasco; an indigenous dialect spoken by the Purepechas in the state of Michoacan.

Huipil

The word Huipil (pronounced wee-peel) comes from the nahuatl word Huipilli that means decorated blouse or dress. This garment is considered a tradition amount ingenious women and is very popular among most of Mexican women, the origin of this piece is from the pre hispanic time.

The motives embroidered in a Huipil are symbolisms can be geometric figures, animals and flowers. The Handmade huipils are made of cotton, wool, silk, poplin and other materials (laces, ribbons), there are different technics to make them depending of the origin of the artisans in Mexico.  The huipil has different sizes from the waist to the ancles, the traditional shape is rectangular., loose fit. The huipil is garment with memory, pride and tradition, the knowledge to make each garment is passed from generation to generation, each artisan express feelings and their culture, each huipil is one of a kind art craft


Traditionally the Huipil comes mainly from the Southern States (Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas, Yucatan) and few central States (Puebla, Veracruz and Michoacan) and some areas of Central America.

>Each artisan has a story to tell, the artisan not only reflects traditions and culture, the artisans put their hearts and souls, and love on each one of a kind piece. The artisans recreate dreams and express happiness and hope, and reaffirm the cultural identity. they have learned the job from Parents and Grandparents, generation after generation.
In Mexico there are around 12 million artisans (FOANART 2014) and most of them live in disadvantage conditions with 2 dollars per day. Many of the artisans have small workshops at home and they travels from small villages and towns to big cities to sell on the street and on flea markets their products. Other few are organised in Cooperatives or different Fair Trade Organisations, few have shops and other collaborate with contemporary designer that mix traditional techniques with modern design.

Mazahua textiles

The Mazahua communities are located in different regions in central Mexico. Their embroidery is very beautiful, the artisans are  mainly women, figures, flowers and animals are the principal designs on their pieces, the women describes their culture and traditions
on the textiles. Many of the artisans travels to big cities to sell products on the streets and flea markets.

Zapotec Hands

Oaxaca states has a rich diversity of textiles heartache from different areas.
Teotitlán del Valle is very know for the beautiful textiles made of wool or cotton coloured with natural paint from flowers, fruits, insects, minerals, etc.

The pieces are weaved on a wood loom.
The Textiles are very appreciated international, and are very beautiful.

Tenango Embroidery

The Tenango embroidery was originated in Tenanago De Doria in Hidalgo State, Otomi region, the artisans from this region reflects their extraordinary creativity on fabrics and textiles, the embroidery pieces are famous and appreciated worldwide. The design reflects the flora and fauna of the region. The pieces are colourful and beautiful, full of tradition and fits perfect in any contemporary environment.

Otomi Rag Dolls

The beautiful and colourful rag dolls from Amealco in Queretaro State are very representative of the community, the tradition started 50 years ago, the initiative was from Guadalupe Rivera, daughter of the famous Painter Diego Rivera (husband of the artist Frida Kahlo).
Guadalupe organised workshops and broguht to them fabrics, laces, buttons, patterns and different materials to elaborate the rag dolls. Guadalupe´s idea was to help the Indigenous women to obtain economical resources, and instead selling the candies in the street of the cities they will have these beautiful toys.

The handmade dolls reflects the feeling of the artisans and the traditions and colours of the Otomi culture.
